Why Healthy Eating is the Key to Great Abs

Healthy eating is the key to great abs. That's one of the biggest things I've learned while creating this site and reviewing the different flat abs programs. No matter how well-developed yourabs are, no matter how intense your abs workouts are, if you have too much fat on your belly, your abs are invisible. So to have great abs, you need to strip away the fat that hides them from the world.

So you can just do lots of abs exercises and spot-reduce your belly to get them to show. Right?

WRONG! Spot reducing doesn't work. These days, those in the know know that spot reducing doesn't work. Those strange and kinky fast abs machines you see on late-night TV don't work. You might be able to strengthen your stomach muscles with some of them (although I'm not going to hold my breath about that) but they won't fix your fat abs. Your body doesn't work that way.

The amount of fat on your belly is determined by your genetics and your overall bodyfat percentage. So the only way to take the fat off your belly is to reduce your overall bodyfat percentage.

And the only way to reduce your bodyfat percentage is to eat healthy. It doesn't matter if you work out for hours a day. If you eat crap, or even too much healthy food, your body will store the excess as fat. You can always overwhelm the benefits of your workout program with bad eating. Think of it this way: a meal at a fast food restaurant will often contain well over a thousand calories. How long would you have to work out to burn 1000 calories? And don't forget the trans-fats, grease, lard, chemicals, and all the other junk in that junk food meal. It is damn hard to build a healthy, low-fat body with washboard abs when your diet is bad.

So what is healthy eating?

Each program reviewed here lays out there own specific recommendations, but the basic ideas are the same:
  • Eat natural, fresh, organic foods whenever possible
  • Get a good balance of lean protein, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats in each meal
  • Eat five or six small meals a day to keep your energy high and minimize the amount of fat your body stores

Notice that I didn't say anything about eating less. If you are on a diet right now, you may actually be able to eat more food than before and still lose the fat that buries your abs today.

That's really all I have to say about healthy eating. For detailed advice on how to eat to turn your fat abs into flat abs, I suggest the guidelines in The Truth About SIX PACK ABS. Mike Geary explains it all in detail, and even includes dozens of specific meal plans you can use as is or modify to suit your own tastes.
