Can You Lose Stomach Fat by Dieting?
I won't try to describe how this all works in detail. The authors of the programs reviewed here (especially The Truth About SIX PACK ABS and Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle ) do a far better job of that than I ever could. But I can give you a short summary:
Dieting Doesn't Spot Reduce
Researchers have proven that you can't spot reduce one area of your body. When you lose weight by dieting, the losses are distributed across your body as determined by your genetics. Dieting does no more to specifically tone your abs than do those weird electric shock gizmos that you used to see on TV (before the FTC busted the companies selling them).
Dieting Destroys Muscle
When you diet, you usually lose weight, particularly at first. But only a fraction of the weight you lose is fat. You actually lose some fat, a lot of water, and some muscle. As you'll discover in these programs, more muscle means a higher resting metabolism, which means your body consumes more calories just to keep itself going. Lose muscle and you get a lower resting metabolism which makes it that much more difficult to keep the weight off or lose it again the next time around.
Dieting Makes Your Body Think You Are Starving and Can Make Your Fatter
Diet for too long and with too few calories, and your body thinks it is starving. When you are starving, your body lets your muscles and joints waste away (it takes calories to maintain them). It puts you into a sluggish, low-energy state so you can conserve calories until food is more plentiful. It also causes your body to store every calorie it can to help you last out the famine. And what does your body do with those calories? It stores them as fat, most likely right around your belly.
Dieting is clearly not the answer. But proper nutrition is a part of the answer. We're talking a good mix of natural, unprocessed foods, in the right amounts, not a fad diet or starving yourself. Despite the way our modern food supply is processed and modified from its natural state, it is possible to get the foods you need for proper nutrition. In The Truth About SIX PACK ABS , Mike Geary lays out the details, offers dozens of example meals, and tells you how to mix and match to customize the meals for your own tastes. No dieting here, just sound nutrition advice.
